What if we saw algae as a resource?

“As a group we have chosen to work with algae. We have been fascinated by the life cycle, the contrast between the disgusting and the beautiful, and the relevance of the subject right now. There is a big problem with algae blooms and oxygen depletion in the Danish fjords this year, and if nothing is done, the problem will only get worse. That is why this issue is interesting for us to delve into.

Algae sets a stage for exciting material studies, and is a very tangible starting point to start our studies from. At the same time, starting from a material is an entry point to start a project from which we have not worked before, and therefore it was a good opportunity to try something new.

There is also a humor in the form of the material and its sensuality – it is slimy, it smells, etc. and humor was something that had worked well in our small projects in the first week of the course, so it was obvious to continue working with it.

Based on our reflections, we have developed our ‘What If’ question:
