What if our digital landscape were physically present?
“We have chosen the formulation a digital landscape, as we think that there is an interesting point of tension between something analogue and digital. Landscape is often associated with something natural and beautiful and is easy to imagine, where the digital is associated with something mechanical and cold, intangible.
Our >What if< question came through a conversation about how unconscious we are about what our data is used for and what we say yes to. Digital has become such an integrated part of our lives. This applies to health records, love lives, location, cookies, entertainment and search histories. All of this data is out of our control.
We are so uncritical and accepting about our online activities that we do not notice how quickly the digital world is developing. We only see the headlines and not the fine print. This has meant that we suddenly live in a world where all of our data is available to everyone, and what used to seem private is now not seen as private. This leads to a scenario that we imagine taking place in the year 2100. In this world, the boundaries between the digital and the physical world have been blurred. A world where people's digital worlds are visible. This opens up the opportunity to explore the new boundaries of how we interact with each other and how new boundaries emerge.
We are curious about what would happen if our digital landscape were physically present, and what that would mean for our society and our way of being.”
